Witches of Narberth
Every Fall, my hometown of Narberth, Pennsylvania puts on a scavenger hunt for kids in an effort to promote small-town businesses. In 2025, I served as Creative Director on the overall project, working to develop multiple special effects, a new guide map, and an all-new pop-up experience in an abandoned storefront.
Narberth Borough Potion Shop
When we had initially discussed new ideas with the Narberth Business Association, one of our main goals was to level up the existing experience, including creating a new interactive stop. What began as an idea for a small tent quickly expanded to a full-blown walk-through experience, which then required more space. I got into contact with a local developer who was kind enough to lend us one of his spaces in downtown Narberth, free of charge!
I then spent the week with collaborators setting up the space, decorating the space, creating lighting effects and soundscapes, and overall theming the former Citizens Bank space into a spooky potion shop designed for kids.
The overall experience was designed to be about 5 minutes long, and could take whole groups of kids at a time. Our Witches would invite the children to grab potion ingredients from a decorated table, and would have each one drop an ingredient into the cauldron. Each time an ingredient was dropped in, fog, lighting, and sound effects would make the potion become reactive to whatever ingredients the kids chose.
In order to ensure good capacity, we designed the experience with two show rooms, so that multiple shows could be running at any given time. Friends and family served as witches, hosts, and greeters, and the entire stop was sponsored by the local government.
We worked with each of our volunteer Witches to design a custom wardrobe for each one, including customized hats, trinkets, and more.
Overall, we saw over 700 kids and 700+ adults run through our experience in the three hours that the event was hosted. Take a look at the experience below!
Special Effects
We also had a chance to work with some of the local businesses to create special effects that tied into their businesses. This included a "dancing" skeleton for a dance studio, a painting with moving eyes for a local art store, a set of movable vampire fangs for an orthodontics group, and a magical swirling book display, as well as costuming, for the local children's poetry theatre. Take a look at the effect and costuming below!
Map Design
I worked with a local designer to help update and redesign the overall map for the Witches of Narberth Experience. This included moving everything from a Microsoft Publisher file to Canva, so other volunteers can access and update the map in the future, as well as working with them to ensure businesses were properly labeled and that the map was easy to understand and follow. I also was responsible for creating the new batch of riddles which led the children to each of the witch stops! Take a look at the new map below!
